About Andhra Pradesh Rashtriya Life Saving Society (APRLSS)

The Andhra Pradesh Rashtriya Life Saving Society (APRLSS) operates under the guidance of the Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) — the official branch of the Royal Life Saving Society (Commonwealth) and a full member of the International Life Saving Federation (ILS).

Formed in August 1998, RLSS (India) was established through a joint agreement between the Royal Life Saving Society UK, Royal Life Saving Society Australia, and the Indian Maritime Foundation, Pune. As an official State Chapter, APRLSS carries forward the mission of empowering individuals across Andhra Pradesh with essential lifesaving, rescue, and first-aid skills.

Our Approach

Our motto — “Whomsoever you see in distress, see in him/her a fellow being” — defines our vision.
We aim to create a first responder in every home, promoting:

  • Safer Homes
  • Safer Workplaces
  • Safer Public Spaces

Through education, awareness, and practical training, APRLSS builds a network of lifesavers capable of responding to emergencies both on land and water.

Our Mission

APRLSS strives to:

  • Provide educational programs in operational safety, first aid, and resuscitation.
  • Promote public awareness on water safety and emergency response through events, workshops, and campaigns.
  • Conduct structured and disciplined training in lifesaving, recovery, and revival techniques.
  • Equip citizens with confidence and competence to save lives in crisis situations.

Our programs combine theory and hands-on practical learning to ensure real-world readiness in emergencies.

Our Story

The inspiration for the Life Saving movement in India began with a tragedy that claimed the lives of 29 schoolchildren when their bus plunged into the river off Wazirabad Bridge near Delhi in 1997. This incident deeply moved Rear Admiral P. D. Sharma and Mrs. Kavita Sharma, who soon dedicated their lives to preventing such losses through public lifesaving education.

In response, Rashtriya Life Saving Society (India) was founded on 2 August 1998 and officially registered in 2001. Since then, under the visionary leadership of Admiral Sharma, the Society has trained thousands of youth across India — empowering them to be first responders during accidents on land, in water, and in disaster situations.

Following this national vision, APRLSS was established to serve Andhra Pradesh, expanding the reach of lifesaving education through local training centers, community programs, and partnerships with state departments and tourism initiatives.

Our Vision for Andhra Pradesh

APRLSS envisions a state where:

  • Every citizen is safety-aware,
  • Every beach and water body is monitored, and
  • Every school and workplace has trained responders ready to act when emergencies strike.

With programs in first aid, lifesaving, lifeguard training, boat handling, flood rescue, and water sports safety, APRLSS is building a new generation of lifesavers to make Andhra Pradesh a model of safety and preparedness.
